Whether you’re new to CBD or have been taking it for a while, one comment always comes up: the taste of CBD oil. While some people don’t seem to mind it, many others don’t like it. But did you know that there are different ways to consume CBD oil that mask, enhance or eliminate its taste? Read on to find out more.
CBD OIL: HOW DOES IT TASTE?
CBD oil can certainly be described as having an acquired taste, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that! Many things in life can be described in the same way (beer, for example!). But why does CBD oil taste so good? It’s largely due to the all-natural components extracted from the stems, flowers and leaves of the plant, which give CBD oil the characteristic earthy, nutty and herbal flavours associated with it.
Terpenes also play a role. These aromatic molecules are located in the trichome glands of the cannabis plant and vary by variety. Terpenes such as limonene produce more citrus notes, while terpinolene has fruity flavours and myrcene gives a herbal taste. All add their own specific flavours to the equation, which impacts the final taste of the CBD oil.
CBD oil carrier
In addition to the phytochemicals derived from the cannabis itself, the carrier oil also plays a considerable role in the taste of CBD oil. To improve bioavailability and ease of dosing, CBD extract is infused with a carrier oil before bottling. The two most commonly used carrier oils are hemp oil and olive oil.
CBD combined with hemp oil is often described as having a nutty flavour, similar to that found in many dietary supplements and health products. Used in cooking or elsewhere, olive oil has a more savoury, peppery taste that complements the terpene-influenced flavours of CBD. Another oil that is gaining popularity is MCT (medium chain triglyceride) oil, an oil derived from coconut oil or palm oil that has various human health benefits.
DON’T LIKE THE TASTE OF CBD OIL? NO PROBLEM
For those who don’t like the taste of CBD oil, there’s no need to worry! There are many options to suit all preferences. Below are some ways to enhance or mask the taste of CBD oil.
-
MIXING CBD OIL WITH YOUR DRINK
While the most common way to consume CBD oil is to administer it sublingually (under the tongue), this method by default imparts all the flavour of the oil. If this is something that bothers you, you can always add your CBD oil to juice, smoothies or even yoghurt as an alternative way to consume it. Just add a few drops and you’re done. The fruity flavours will cover up any traces of the CBD taste.
-
USING CBD CAPSULES
Another way to consume CBD without the taste is to go without it altogether! CBD oil can be easily purchased in capsule form; simply swallow them with water and enjoy the same high quality CBD oil without the taste. Taken as part of a morning vitamin or supplement routine, these softgels are popular for their ease, discretion and lack of taste and smell. With consistent doses in each capsule, they are perfect for those who keep an eye on their daily CBD intake.
-
EATING CBD EDIBLES
This last method shouldn’t shock anyone. Using cannabis edibles is a well-documented consumption option, and it’s certainly no different for CBD-rich products. There are many tasty choices such as gummy bears, gum and flavoured tablets, all of which are designed to remove the taste of CBD oil and replace it with something much more palatable.
ENJOY CBD OIL – WITHOUT THE STRONG TASTE!
As you can see, there are many different options for masking or enhancing the taste of CBD oil. So if you are interested in CBD but are not happy with the taste, you are certainly not alone. There are many other ways to enjoy it!
